Is Gluten Sensitivity a “No Man’s Land” or a “Fertile Crescent” for Research?
Gluten can be associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome in the absence of Celiac Disease.
Phoenix, Arizona______ The American Journal of Gastroenterology’s January 2010 issue addressed the ‘unknown and unquantified’ relationship between Gluten Sensitivity and Celiac Disease. Are they one and the same? Or can they be separate? In this article, the focus was on patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They suggest a model (pictured below) that encompasses the ever-expanding world of gluten sensitivity and celiac disease.
The closing dialogue included this statement: “We consider gluten sensitivity as an entity that that may, or may not, include milder forms of the celiac spectrum. Celiac disease is of course by definition a “gluten sensitive” condition”.
