American Journal of Gastroenterology Identifies Gluten Sensitivity as a “No-Mans Land”
Gluten can cause functional bowel disorder-like symptoms in the absence of Celiac Disease.
Phoenix, Arizona______ The American Journal of Gastroenterology’s June 2009 issue explored the differentiation of Gluten Sensitivity and Celiac Disease with respect to gastro-intestinal symptoms (both Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Functional Bowel Disorders). Researchers from Mayo Clinic focused on the “emerging concept that gluten-induced pathophysiology may constitute an underlying factor in symptom generation in a proportion of patients with IBS-like symptoms.”
They wrote “one of the earliest appreciations of this part of the spectrum of Gluten Sensitivity was in family members of celiac disease who, despite not having villous atrophy, often had evidence of immune responsiveness to gluten.”
The Authors summarized their study by saying “Our model proposes mild gluten sensitivity as yet another possible cause of IBS symptoms.”
